Cold Weather instructions

  • Disconnect your hose from the outside faucet.
  • If your home has crawl space vents and a crawl space access panel, please close or block the vents with heavy cardboard or insulation board. The crawl space vent size is usually 8” x 16”.
  • Find the water shut off valve for your home. Test it during office hours so that you will be able to use it quickly if needed.
  • Mark the location of the water meter so it can be found under the snow.
  • Leave your heat at a normal setting.
  • Leave the cabinet doors open underneath any sink even if you are going to be out of town.
  • Below 20 degrees: Keep your kitchen and bath sink cabinet doors open to allow heat into those areas.  Also keep your laundry area doors open.
  • Below 10 degrees: It is helpful to allow a small stream of water to flow constantly from your faucets in addition to the above precautions.
